October Pastoral

October Pastoral

Goats will eat anything.

In fall they wander in green fields

eating. Sun shines

illuminating the way.

Moving mindfully

I follow the goats

meandering at leisure

in the sunlight.

There is nowhere to be.

A few cars pass by

but civilization is far away.

I do not know my purpose.

Only following the goats

in the sun

in a warm October.

Birds call,

flying as one does

in a dream. Perched

in leafless trees.

Staying north for the winter.

What to do. What to do.

Nature’s majesty sits

patiently this afternoon

while following the goats

and dreaming with the birds.
